SPORTS GUY'S TOP NBA DRAFT BLUNDERS

It's been a tough month for the Sports Guy after the Celtics ended up with the 5th overall pick despite tanking the entire second half of their season.

But after repeatedly stating that Kevin Durant should be the No. 1 overall pick instead of Greg Oden, we can't help but call the guy out on some recent draft blunders he's made as an NBA columnist.

Let's just say he wouldn't make a much better GM than Danny Ainge based on his draft diaries from year's past:

5. "Charlotte takes Adam Morrison. Love that pick." - 2006 NBA Draft Diary

'Nuff said. Granted, he was only a rookie last year. But do we really need more time to realize how horrible this pick was after getting benched by the Bobcats?

4. "Following a trade with Portland, Utah takes Deron (don't call me De-RON) Williams at No. 3. Perfect pick – with some luck, he'll be half as good as Chris Paul." - 2005 NBA Draft Diary

Deron Williams looked like one of the best players in the entire league by the end of the year. Granted, being half as good as Chris Paul isn't an insult these days...

3. "Joe Forte falls to the Celts at No. 21! Dad and I are fired up right now. Even the dogs are fired up -- Maggie just belly-flopped on Abbie and they're rolling around on the ground. Good times ... good times." - 2001 NBA Draft Diary

Forte's career in Boston: 8 games, 0.8 PPG. Whoops.

2. "The Magic are on the clock with the first pick. If they're smart, they take Emeka Okafor. If they're dumb, they take Howard. It's that simple." - 2004 NBA Draft Diary

Okafor is no slouch, but what's the over/under on the number of years until his back gives out completely? Our guess is 3.

1. "One more thing: Years from now, we will remember "Yao Ming over Jay Williams" the same way we remember "Bowie over Jordan," "Traylor for Nowitzki," "Carroll for McHale and Parish," "Aguirre over Thomas" and every other great draft day blunder in NBA history. I'm not just predicting it, I'm guaranteeing it." - 2002 NBA Draft Diary

Yaosers in your trowers!

Those be some great finds, gentlemen.

To be fair, there's no way to know how good Williams would've been. The guy was great before his injury.

God bless you, that's awesome.

Not to mention his man-love of Luke Walton.

I'm not seeing the "blunders" that you chaps are. Sure, he completely missed on Forte, but the other four are pretty decent claims (Morrison is still a work in progress, Deron Williams is better than anyone could have hoped, you say yourself that Okefor is no slouch, and Jay Will crashing his motorcycle ought not be held against BS!). If those are his biggest "blunders" in over ten years of writing about the NBA draft then he's doing a hell of a lot better than most GMs.

Anonymous said...

Morrison is a work in progress? When a player never plays defense in high school, college, or the pros, I would say he is more than a work in progress. I would say he is a glorified jump shooter with absolutely no game on the defensive end.

Also, Deron Williams led a team to the Final Four, so I have no idea how you can say he is better than anyone ever thought he would be.

And even of Emeka is no slouch, that doesn't change the fact that Simmons said, "If they are dumb, they will take Howard." Its not as if he said, "Howard might do well, but Okafor is better." He said they would be dumb to pick him... whos the dumb one now?

Even with the motorcycle accident, it still doesn't change the fact that Yao has been 10 times more productive than all of those other busts he named.

definitely some mistakes in there, but when you're throwing a #21 pick (hardly a sure thing in the draft) thats a bit of a reach in my mind. and you can't really hold adam morrison only against simmons--many others had the same thing wrong. and though he's wrong with williams/paul, paul is definitely a superior player, so you could argue that, despite how good williams is, paul would have been the better pick. nitpicking, i know.

that's good work guys..

Has any sportwrite gone from funny to annoying in a faster amount of time? Seriously. BS has about 5 articles. Vegas, family and friends, Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox. That's about it.

Oh and this postseason, DWill made the jump to elite PG status. Nash, Kidd, then Williams.

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure he gave the Nets a hard time for the three-for-one trade where they swapped Eddie Griffin for Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins and, um, somebody else. You can add that to the list.

Any truth to the rumor that BS is leaving his wife for the NBA Trade Machine??

Windier E. Megatons said...

The Ming/Williams one is pretty damning. Even if Williams had never gotten into that accident, he would have had to be the second coming of Magic or Jordan for that prediction to come even half true. And you know it's not because Simmons thought Williams would necessarily be an all-timer but because he thought Yao would be a spectacular bust, just like Tony Kornheiser calling Yao a "stick figure." Well, that didn't exactly work out for those guys, did it? The Howard one is pretty bad too. The rest, eh. Of course it all seems worse because Simmons is paid to pump up his own opinions by saying stuff like, "I'm not just predicting it, I'm guaranteeing it." If he were someone more laid-back in his writing style, people would just go, "Well, he made a couple bad calls" and that would be that. It's not like there was almost anyone who would have predicted Howard and Yao ending up as good as they have.

The real irony in the Howard one is that Simmons has gone the other way this year. In 2004 he was endorsing the safe pick ("If they're smart, they take Okafor") over the rawer guy with a potentially higher ceiling. Now he's endorsing Durant as the #1 pick because Oden is safe, but Durant could be a once-in-a-generation player (while freely admitting that Durant could not work out while Oden is a sure thing, just with a lower ceiling). One wonders if his dismissal of Howard is informing this stance, in the back of his mind somewhere.

though some of these points make great sense, it's very easy to play the hindsight game. give him a break.

Yeah right. Deron's top 10, but not top 5, and sure as HELL not top 3 and not yet elite.

In order:
Kidd, Nasty, CP3, Agent Zero, Parker, Boom Dizzle, Mr. Big Shot, Deron, Bibby, Jet (or Hinrich)...

What do you expect from the guy who brags about how good a gambler he is and than goes out and loses to his wife?

It is not surprising to me - there is a reason it is alled 'gambling',
but he's the prick who acts like he knows more about it than anyone
else.

And it's not surprising he missed on these players and most others in
the draft - as he himself admits, he doesn't follow college basketball.

So it's not like he knows what he's talking about. I'm sure he just reads a bunch of columns about the draft and talks himself into which ones he agrees with. What's annoying about him is that he is so matter of fact about his opinions, even when they are less informed than the average Joe's.

Kudos for looking, but really, what's the point? Anyone who puts out as much as Simmons is bound to get stuff wrong over the years. You could do this with any writer; if the Realests stays lucky, maybe someone will do it for you one day.

To agree with you and some other responses, I think the J-Will call is legitimately awful; he would've needed to be a top-4 PG in the league to be better than Yao. And Dwight Howard was a far better pick than Okafor, although Emeka was the safe bet (a strategy Simmons has now backed off, in advocating Durant over Oden).

But as previously noted, everyone got Morrison wrong; #21 isn't so bad to err on; and Chris Paul is still better than Deron W.

My own compaints about Simmons aside, I have a bone to pick with this kind of post. I don't want to write an essay in your comment section, so I'll respond using my own blog. (Do people even do that? Longtime reader, new blogger).

Anonymous said...

how is this such a sure thing to all of you that chris paul is a much better pg than deron williams. williams was dominant in the postseason, he was the only one scoring consistantly in the spurs series where he outplayed parker. baron outplayed him but it was closer than u would think. deron was the best player than postseason on a western conferernce finals team

Anonymous said...

Megatons, I agree completely (this is the anon that was posted at 6:08 PM that starts with Morrison and his defense).

Anyways, your point is exactly what I was trying to get at. Sure, his predictions may not look so bad when you just read "J-Will over Yao" or "Okafor over Howard", but when he adds things like "I guarantee that I am right," and "If they are smart, they will take Okafor. If they are stupid, they will take Howard", it just makes him look like an arrogant prick (but what exactly can you expect from a guy that turned a blogging "career" into a *6 figure job?)

Derron Williams did make a big statement these playoffs, but CP3 is better. He can run a team much better when it comes to getting players involved and leading the fast break. Williams is great for the pick and roll offense that the jazz run and his shooting is the only advantage of Paul. But i think every team in the NBA would take paul over williams, even after his great performance in the playoffs.

This was indeed the year he trashed Rod Thorn for that Eddie Griffin trade:

"As the New York crowd howls in disgust, Vecsey reports that the Nets dealt Eddie Griffin to the Rockets for Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins, Kermit Washington and the No. 23 pick, or as I like to call it, "C-R-A-P." Is there a worse franchise than the Nets?"

Also:

"Meanwhile, Pitino congratulates Bulls GM Jerry Krause with playing a good bluff and making everyone think he wanted Gasol at No. 4 (when Curry was a much better pick for the Bulls)."

Drafts are funny this way (Tony Parker was an afterthought at 28) but if anyone should understand that, it's him. But he's always been a fan first.

Nitpicking plain and simple

Anonymous said...

What the hell? Deron Williams is better than JET or Mike Bibby. Swap Deron for JET straight up, and the Mavs don't lose to Golden State.

Anonymous said...

Just gotta say, some of these comments about Deron Williams are unbelievably ignorant. You obviously haven't been watching him play. He's easily top 5, possibly top 3.

And for comments that Paul is clearly better than him, there have been several GMs who have been quoted in articles (anonymously, of course), that they would take Williams over Paul.

As for Simmons predictions -- wow, what a surprise. He got some wrong. I'm not saying he's as good as he thinks he is, but at least he's going out on a limb and making some calls before the draft. But that's the nature of blogging these days -- wait for someone to go out on a limb, and then wait to see if they're right before you rip them. Meanwhile, you don't have the guts to make a call yourself.

Anonymous said...

You guys are making mountains out of mole hills... if he's screwed up that many times (and I'm not even agreeing that some of those are screw ups) then he's done better than most draft analysts and a decent number of GM's. It sounds like you're reaching on some, and eh, seeing how many pics he's called over the years, I'd say he has a decent batting average so to speak.

Anonymous said...

Isn't it time to get off the Bill Simmons bandwagon and start doing something original. The only reason why people read your blog is because it had something to do Simmons. Create something new like Simmons did and maybe someday you will have people read your blog because it was worth reading.

Jay Williams was very average before the injury. As a Bulls fan, I can tell you he was NOT bound for stardom. Hinrich would have taken his job.

Anonymous said...

I think it's fair game. Bill's always mentioning how he should be an NBA GM, and a large part of his repertoire is criticizing trades and draft picks (and coaches, and players, and scouts, and executives and...), often in hindsight, and throwing people under the bus, so it's fair to point out when he's blown it completely. You know he'd do the same to you, and probably get a thousand words out of it.

not to mention his excitement over the celtics trading for telfair last off season, which helped portland to get brandon roy. ha.

Anonymous said...

Wow, if these were his worst blunders, then he's pretty damn good.
